The Responsible Services of Alcohol online course is available for those who wish to work in licenced venues serving alcohol in NSW.

Participants will learn:

  1. How to serve or sell alcohol responsibly
  2. How to assist customers to drink within appropriate limits
  3. How to assess alcohol-affected customers and identify customers to whom sale or service must be refused
  4. How to correctly refuse to serve alcohol

Course Overview

STA offers a nationally recognised training program that meets the requirements of SITHFAB021 Provide responsible service of alcohol and Liquor and Gaming NSW (L&G NSW) RSA course NSW. This unit of competency is nationally recognised and delivered by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), accredited by Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA).

This program is suitable for individuals seeking or preparing to work in an industry where alcohol is sold or served, such as hotels, restaurants, bottle shops or licenced clubs.

This course is relevant to anyone who has contact with patrons on licensed premises, such as bar staff, courtesy and security staff, waiters, concierge, front door and reception staff.

RSA course aims to provide candidates with the knowledge and understanding required to responsibly act when selling, supplying or promoting alcohol, with the duty of care by law and principles of harm minimisation.

Course Pre-Requisites

There are no formal educational prerequisite requirements for this program.

Whilst NSW laws regulate the sale, consumption and provision of alcohol to people under 18 years. There is no specific advice given by the L&G NSW, Liquor Act, Liquor Regulation or Service Skills Australia about the age of participants undertaking RSA Training.

Language Literacy and Numeracy

The training and assessment for this course is conducted in English only. The training package mandates that all participants seeking admission into the course have sufficient literacy and numeracy skills. These skills are further explained as follows:

 

  • Adequate literacy skills are required to read and comprehend documents such as ID cards, proof of age cards, drivers licences, statutory signage, warning signs and wording within advertising or promotional material, in-house policies and procedures and any general plain English regulatory and advisory information issued by local, or state and territory liquor licensing authorities

  • Adequate numeracy skills are required to measure and calculate standard drinks or samples and calculate blood alcohol levels related to alcohol consumption.

We will attempt to support you with English assistance, such as providing verbal assessments in English. However, should your needs for support or assistance exceed the support we can provide, we will refer you to a suitable organisation to assist further, like TAFE.

Course Duration

The duration of the course is at least 6.0 hours.


Mode of Delivery

The training program is delivered online.

People requiring special provisions are advised to mention their requirements in the enrolment form or contact administration staff prior to the commencement of the course to ensure that their needs are catered for.

Course Contents

The course covers the following:

  • Describing and understanding responsible service of alcohol

  • The legal provisions within the Liquor Act and Regulations.

  • Advising customers on the types of alcoholic beverages

  • Describing and understanding a ‘standard drink.’

  • Recognising levels of intoxication of customers and take appropriate action

  • Strategies to assist customers in drinking responsibly

  • Strategies to prevent underage drinking

  • Factors that detract from customer satisfaction

  • Benefits of implementing responsible service of alcohol

Assessment Methods

Participants assessed online through open-book assessment, role play, case studies and problem-solving activities.

Awards

After completion of the course, you will receive:

  • A Statement of attainment in the unit SITHFAB021 Provide responsible service of alcohol issued by Spectral Training Academy; and

  • An Interim Certificate provided by NSW Liquor and Gaming to be given by Spectral Training Academy.

You will generally receive the Interim Certificate and Statement of Attainment (SOA) the next working day, via email.

Photo Competency Card

Once students are provided with your interim certificate, you can apply to obtain a Photo Competency Card by visiting Service NSW and have it processed. You need to take a valid hundred points photo ID and interim certificate while visiting Service NSW for application.

  • The competency card lasts for five years and needs to renew before the expiry date.

  • People seeking a replacement Photo Competency Card need to contact the NSW L&G.
